Lysogenic and lytic viral production in marine microbial communities
نویسنده
چکیده
It is now well established that viruses are an abundant component of marine ecosystems and they are being increasingly recognised and accepted as important contnbutors to element cycling within the microbial loop. However, some of the key questions regarding the ecological significance of viruses in the marine environment still remain largely unanswered. Thus, particular interest is currently focused on the extent to which lytic production or lysoyeny predominates and the nature of factors in the marine environment, particularly nutrient availability and mult~plicity of .infection (MOI), which might influence the lysisflysogeny 'decision' The present evidence is still insufficient to unambiguously assess the relative ecological significance of lysogeny versus lysis and progress in this area will rely on the development and application of new techniques. This review attempts to collect recent information relating to this central question, focusing particularly on those viruses which infect the bacterioplankton and nanoand picophytoplankton.

Lysogeny and virus-induced mortality of bacterioplankton in surface, deep, and anoxic marine waters
Lysogeny (bacteria containing inducible prophages) and lytic viral infection (bacteria in a lytic stage of infection) were investigated at the community level in contrasting marine environments such as estuarine versus offshore waters, surface versus deep waters, and oxic versus anoxic waters in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas. The frequency of lysogenic cells (FLC) in bacterioplankton commun...
متن کاملComparative Modeling of Lytic and Lysogenic Phage-host Systems
Bacteriophages are the most abundant organisms on the planet and play crucial roles in bacterial population dynamics, microbial food webs, and nutrient cycling. Understanding models of bacteriophage population dynamics is necessary to fully understand these ecological processes, but to do so we must mathematically distinguish between the different virus life cycles. Here, we build on two three-...
متن کاملViruses in subarctic lakes and their impact on benthic and pelagic bacteria.
Virus-bacterium interactions were investigated in the pelagic and benthic habitats in a set of lakes along an altitudinal gradient in the subarctic northern Sweden. Viral and bacterial abundances showed a significant variation between the lakes, with the highest benthic microbial abundances recorded in a high-altitude lake [993 m above sea level (a.s.l.)], whereas the highest pelagic microbial ...
متن کاملOccurrence of Lysogenic Bacteria in Marine Microbial Communities as Determined by Prophage Induction
Viruses are abundant and dynamic members of the marine microbial community, and it is important to understand the11 role in the ecology of natural microbial populations We have previously found lysogenic bacteria to be a significant proportion (43%) of the cultivable heterotrophic microbial population. As the majority of marine bacteria are not cultivable using standard plating methods, we meas...
متن کاملDynamics of Viral Abundance and Diversity in a Sphagnum-Dominated Peatland: Temporal Fluctuations Prevail Over Habitat
Viruses impact microbial activity and carbon cycling in various environments, but their diversity and ecological importance in Sphagnum-peatlands are unknown. Abundances of viral particles and prokaryotes were monitored bi-monthly at a fen and a bog at two different layers of the peat surface. Viral particle abundance ranged from 1.7 x 10(6) to 5.6 x 10(8) particles mL(-1), and did not differ b...
